Dinétahdéé’ Iiná Baahané–Stories of Life from Navajoland—A Navajo Performing Arts Festival
Friday, August 7th, 2009For a long time, we’ve known that the Navajo Nation has a wealth of performing arts talent—something Navajos have always known. Right now, there are almost no opportunities for the non-Navajo public, venues or booking agents to experience this talent.
We think the time is here to create Dinétahdéé’ Iiná Baahané–Stories of Life from Navajoland—A Navajo Performing Arts Festival, a festival which showcases the great diversity of contemporary Navajo performance, from rock and hip-hop to classical to country and gospel and electronic and theater and fashion and more.
We believe that Dinétahdéé’ Iiná Baahané–Stories of Life from Navajoland—A Navajo Performing Arts Festival should:
- Take place annually on the Navajo Reservation
- Be partnered from the beginning with a Navajo organization
- Showcase the diversity of Navajo performing arts and artists
- Train Navajo young people how to run the festival and eventually, take it over completely
- Introduces Navajo performers to the business of the industry – what is an agent? What is a contract? etc.
- Serve as a performing arts marketplace for the best Navajo performing artists to regional, national and international booking agents and venues
We’ve scheduled the first meeting for
August 13
9-11 am
Dine’ College Administration
Dine’ College Board of Regents Conference room
Tsaile, AZ
And sent out the word. We’re all keeping our fingers crossed – I think it will be very exciting, with wonderful potential. I’ll blog more next week!
